Carbon Nano-Onions.
Carbon Nano-Onions (CNOs) are spherical, multi-layered carbon structures with a heat resistance of 1,700 °C. They were originally not developed for industrial applications, but were used in medical research – for wound care, biocompatible coatings and as drug delivery systems.
- Size: 7 nm primary particles, approx. 200 nm clusters
- Material: 100% pure carbon
- Structure: Multi-layered spherical shells
- State: Stably incorporated into the emulsion or oil
- Reactivity: Chemically inert, insoluble
In the cutting zone between tool and workpiece, Carbon Nano-Onions behave like microscopic ball bearings. They convert sliding friction into rolling friction – the decisive mechanism for controlling heat, wear and tool life.
This effect is not achieved through coating or chemical reaction, but purely mechanically – and therefore independently of material, geometry or cutting speed.
Safety & Classification
From a toxicological perspective, particle size is not the decisive factor, but rather chemical composition, reactivity and bioavailability. Carbon Nano-Onions meet all relevant criteria in an uncritical manner:
Nanoparticles are part of everyday life — when grinding coffee, in road traffic and in candle soot. The difference with Nano-Onions: their properties are known, controlled and deliberately usable.
